I sold my hardcover books when I was moving to FL. so had to pause in my re-read while waiting for the local library to have NiC & CS for me. While waiting, I re-read Southern Vampire series. OMG, I LOOOOVE Sokie. She is so polite. And she is amazingly intelligent. Its funny how Anita has a degree in Preternatural Biology, yet people have to explain things to her 1,000 times (yes, you HAVE to have sex.. YES Anita, you must feed... etc)... and did I mention how POLITE she is??!! Even in her THOUGHTS she tries to never say a bad word about anyone!!!! *adores*

I never really cared about people being rude or whatnot, though I often got annoyed by some of Anita's hypocrisy, as well as her female chauvanism. And, yeah, how many times does someone have to repeat something to Anita before she gets it? Though, have you ever noticed that...well, here's an example: with lycanthropy she started out knowing hardly anything about them, even simple things, and then in the last few books she's been pretty much an expert on them. Which she totally shouldn't be, she's not even a real shapeshifter.

I had somehow gotten the impression that the main character in the Southern Vampire books wasn't that intelligent? I don't know, I think I was talking to someone about LKH and they mentioned that. But if she is intelligent, I probably wouldn't mind reading them....So, you'd say they're worth checking out?

I actually never read that series...though in one of the short story compilations (forget the title, it might have been Bite) they had a Sokie episode. It is interesting enough to get into?

And on the Anita thing, yeah, I totally agree on the hypocrisy, but she has been dating Micah-he probably taught her a thing or two on lycantrhopes. He does for the coalition, after all :P

p.s. from real-life experience, a college degree does not make you smart.

Micah isn't exactly stunningly brilliant, there. Plus, she's had the arduereueuer for a few books now and still gets confused by that, despite the fact that if a sane person had suddenly gotten it they would have gone to JC and been like "okay, tell me EVERYTHING."

I know a college degree doesn't make you smart. LKH doesn't. It's just like she seems to think being a male in law enforcement makes you a misogynist.

LOL, Anita did go to JC and say "okay, tell me EVERYTHING". But once he started talking, she was like "wait, I don't want to know"... and every time they would convince her to 'feed', she would then change her mind at the last minute.. isn't that why the sex rules her life - just like JC told her it would if she kept putting it off - for like... ever since NiC..

Hmm.. I was just re-reading NiC and it is just a wealth of info that I sort of missed the first time. Like, Anita spent 6 months studying pack stuff with Verne in Tennessee (while she was studying 'control' with Marianne).. JC was 5 yrs old (in vampire years) when he met Asher..

Dead until Dark (book 1 in Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series) is DEFINATELY worth checking out. While Sookie only has a H.S. diploma and works in a bar, she is VERY smart. And once she learns something, nobody needs to tell her again, that's for sure. She has ZERO hypocrisy, and every book has loads of murder, mystery and such. Charlaine Harris is mainly a murder/mystery writer (I think all of her detective series have female heros), but she does the the fantasy/romance aspects well too.

Sometimes I wonder if Charlaine was a fan of AB, then got sick of all the bad things about it and decided she would write her own version of a vampire/were world with a cool female hero ;)

I think I actually have the first book somewhere, I think I bought it when it first came out, but never got around to reading it. Does it have a sort of cartoon-y drawing on the cover?

I'll have to read it, then, she sounds way cool.
